Hi friends!!!
Ann & Spencer here! We’re the dive buddies behind Open Water Supply (we are also in love)!
This brand is a labor of love in so many ways, so I (Ann) wanted to share a bit of our story and what inspired this project.
My grandfather logged over 1,300 dives in his lifetime. He started his diving journey after college in Seattle, where he got certified, and later became a Navy diver. After the Navy, he settled in Claremont, CA, where he worked as a doctor, raised my mom and uncle with my grandmother, and spent countless weekends diving along the Southern California coast and at Catalina Island. He and my grandmother (she didn't dive because she couldn't get her ears to equalize so sometimes she would snorkel above) and his dive buddies would go on dive trips all around the world!
When I was a kid, my grandfather would come home from these trips and make epic dive videos—set to Beatles songs—of all the fish he’d seen. I loved those videos, even if I didn’t fully understand what they meant to him. His last dives were in 2007, before a stroke in 2008 ended his time underwater.
Growing up, I always loved the ocean (I just looove swimming), but I never really thought about becoming a diver myself. That changed during a holiday with Spencer’s family, when we snorkeled with manta rays. It was one of those “aha” moments where everything just clicked: I had to get my scuba certification.
Suddenly, my grandfather—who I’d sometimes felt less connected to than my male cousins—became a part of my story in a way that felt so clear. Diving became this beautiful way to carry on his legacy, something that tied me to my family and kept me grounded. Even as my grandparents grow older, I’ll always have this connection to him and the underwater world he loved so much.
i told spencer that I wanted to get scuba certified and i wanted him to be my buddy and that was that.
So, why Open Water Supply? Honestly, because we got tired of how meh most scuba merch is. There’s so much cute surf apparel out there, but when it comes to scuba? Let’s just say the vibe has been seriously lacking. And let’s be real—that probably has a lot to do with the fact that white men have dominated the scuba industry for way too long.
Our vision for Open Water Supply is:
a) to create the fun, scuba-themed clothes I’ve always dreamed of,
b) to bring the same cool, inviting energy that surf culture has—but for scuba, and
c) to connect today’s divers (like us) with the generations of divers who came before us (like my grandfather).
We’re so excited to share this journey with you. Let’s make scuba stylish, inclusive, and, most importantly, fun!
